Returning to one's melodic roots is a step all great bands do, and the Deftones do not disappoint. The band's latest album, creatively self-titled, follows this return to the foundation the Deftone's laid from their very beginning: hard rock. From Hexagram to Moana this album will push your stereo to it's proverbial limits. Even the song titles seem to be more hardcore than usual, with titles like "Battle-Axe" and "Deathblow". While the overall cd tends to take a harder approach than most of their albums, don't fret. "Deftones" still comes together and produces as one of their best albums to date.
As soon as you pick this CD up go straight to track three. Do not hesitate, do not stutter. Go straight to song three, entitled "Minerva". Minerva, hands down, is the baddest-ass song since "Change", and overall it's arguably much, much better. This track literally sets the musical tone for the entire album, as you'll eventually see once you pick up this exquisite cd. While Minerva was the only track eligible by the music-gods for "single-status", multiple others at least are deserving of votes. Those notables include "Lucky You", "Hexagram", and "Anniversary of An Uninteresting Event." If you're into hard-rock, this cd is for you. If you're a Deftone's fan and you haven't picked this one up yet, do it at least for "Minerva". Or for the sober children in India. Whichever you prefer.
