Godzilla Raids Again Remastered Review
Toho
March 30th, 2007
Godzilla is back, and he's been completely remastered to look better than ever on the latest remastered DVD release of Godzilla Raids Again. If you've ever considered picking up the Godzilla series on DVD, now is the best time to do so because Toho (the production company behind Godzilla) has begun re-releasing every Godzilla film as a remastered DVD, and the quality is downright phenomenal. If you're unfamiliar with the storyline, here's quick synopsis to bring you up to speed: "Godzilla is back, and this time he's not alone! While scouting the seas for schools of fish, young pilots Tsukioka and Kobayashi encounter Godzilla and the spiny monster Anguirus in heated battle on a small Japanese island. The two beasts tumble into the ocean and soon resurface in Osaka, laying waste to the city in a fight to the death. As the threat of destruction mounts, the two heroes muster their courage for the final showdown with Godzilla." Overall Godzilla Raids Again is a great film, but like any DVD I have the pleasure of reviewing, what about the special features?
It's only fair to cut Toho some slack with this DVD series because these are remastered films, meaning it's damn near impossible to come up with the usual slew of special features. They did do a nice job by including both versions of the film (Japan and US) onto one DVD however, and they even threw in some very cool audio commentary from two of the producers. You're also looking at a slide show of the original movie posters, as well as an "Art of Suit Acting" featurette that is pretty slick. Considering this film was released more than 50 years ago, I'm nothing but utterly impressed with the remastered DVD release of Godzilla Raids Again. Film buffs probably already have this DVD preordered, but as for the rest of us head down to the video store and pick it up as a rental; that is, if you haven't seen the film before. If you like it, it defintely deserves a spot on your movie shelf. Overall an outstanding DVD considering how old this movie is!
