Dave Chappelle's Block Party Review
Unrated Version
2006
When a full-length movie goes straight to DVD it's natural to have some doubts. You know what I mean; it probably couldn't or didn't cut it in the theater. However here we have an exception, because this DVD has the name of arguably the most popular comedian in the college community right now on the cover: Dave Chappelle. On September 18th, 2004, Dave Chappelle threw a massive, no-holds barred block party of epic proportions out in Brooklyn, New York, with some of the biggest names in Hip Hop headlining such as Kanye West, The Roots, Erykah Badu, Mos Def, and The Fugees. This hilarious, unrated DVD takes you through the three days leading up to the block party along with all the hysterical interviews Dave has with the local inhabitants of not only Brooklyn, but also his hometown of Dayton, Ohio. On his way to New York, Dave stops and hands out tons of free concert tickets to dozens of surprised fans, from an entire college marching band to old white people on the street corners.
While the sole basis of this jam packed DVD is the block party concert itself, the interviews with the crazy people Dave runs into are what really makes this disc a must have. I don't think "weird" does many of these folks justice; if they don't get you to raise an eyebrow I don't know who or what can because you must've seen it all. On a side note, this is not a stand-up DVD, nor is it anything like "The Chappelle Show" that aired on Comedy Central and arguably what shot Dave up to the celebrity A-List. If you're not a fan of Hip Hop, Dave Chappelle's Block Party may not be worth the purchase; so just head over to the forums and win yourself a free copy. If you do like the aforementioned artists then you're in for a real treat, because this is one kick ass concert. Quite possibly the coolest part of the concert is when the college marching band storms down the block with Kanye West singing "Jesus Walks"; this is just one of the many cool moments that makes this DVD really rock. Music aside, Dave Chappelle is simply hysterical and the fact that all of his jokes are improv and behind the scenes really make this DVD shine.
If you're into the artists above and Dave Chappelle makes you pee your pants, then you need to go out and pick up Dave Chappelle's Block Party as soon as humanly possible. If you don't like Hip Hop all that much, but you're infatuated with Mr. Chappelle then I'd put your wallet away and go win one of the two free copies that I'm giving away in the forums! All around a solid unrated DVD with tons of extras and of course, lots of Dave Chappelle doing what he does best. This is one straight-to-DVD movie you simply cannot pass up.
