A Dog Year Review
Written by Jon Katz
2002
Only 209 pages long, A Dog Year is a fairly quick book to read for anyone. If you happen to be a dog lover, or more specifically ever owned a Labrador or a Border Collie, you'll read this fantastic Jon Katz book front to finish in a matter of two or three days. Katz wrote A Dog Year to show not only how incredible and fullfilling dog ownership can be, but also just how big of a responsibility it can be; not just for one dog, but for two or three! The author takes you through a roller coaster of stories that begin with his first two labs, Julius and Stanley, how they interact with Devon, the maniacal border collie, and beyond. Katz talks about how he got so attached to all of them, how they became his best friends, and how hard it was to let them go.
While the book does have its sad moments, you'll find yourself laughing more than feeling sad. If you've ever owned a dog, lost one, or simply are thinking about getting a new puppy, this book is highly recommended. A Dog Year will touch on all your emotions, teach you about the perils of training, and provide you with a thorough warning if you're seriously considering buying a border collie. This is a perfect Summer read; it's short, funny, and a legitimate page turner that will really help you appreciate our best friends. My highest recommendation!
